The Archaeologist

We have always wondered,

How mankind came to be.

They left stories, paintings,

bones and tracks for us to see.

We dig, we wonder, we search for purpose,

To the past we pray.

But I do sometimes wonder,

Did our purpose there once lie?

The time is moving far too fast,

To find what’s hidden in the past.

So maybe we should look inside,

A lifetime, some might say, it last.

And so the digging now begins,

Inside our hole of lust and sin.

You fight the dragons in the deep,

Through pain and fear and time you spin.

You can’t give up, you must fight back.

To find the knowledge that you lack.

Some find it fast, some find it slow,

Some find freedom, others just go back.

But if you find, it hold it dear,

In sun, in rain, in pain, in fear.

And if you lose it, or if you change,

You now have knowledge where to steer.

You take a breath and down you go,

The path you walk is one you know.

So on and on this story goes,

And from your wisdom now you grow.

Like the tree lets every leaf depart,

Yet never fears an empty heart.

For every root that dares grow deep

Must first endure the winter's sleep.
